Chapter 8 - Emily’s Signature

Maya survived the emergency surgery.

Dr. Patel removed the device before the infection reached her bloodstream, but she warned Emily that recovery would take months.

Emily sat beside Maya’s hospital bed all night.

At dawn, Detective Ortiz entered carrying copies of the recovered documents.

“We found your name.”

Emily stared at the first page.

AUTHORIZED FAMILY CONSENT: EMILY THORNE.

The signature looked exactly like hers.

“That’s forged.”

“There are seventeen forms.”

“I never signed any of them.”

Ortiz placed another document on the table.

A life-insurance policy worth five million dollars.

The beneficiary was Robert.

Coverage had begun two weeks before Maya’s procedure.

Emily’s stomach turned.

“He expected her to die.”

“We believe he knew death was possible.”

The black data drive contained files from eleven illegal human trials. Most subjects were adults paid under false pretenses.

Maya was the only child.

And according to the records, Emily had approved everything.

News spread quickly.

By afternoon, reporters stood outside Riverside Medical Center.

Robert’s attorney released a statement claiming Emily had designed the scheme and was blaming her husband after the experiment failed.

Online comments called her a monster.

Hospital administrators restricted her access to Maya until child services completed an emergency review.

When security asked her to leave the room, Maya clung to her.

“My mom didn’t do this!”

Emily fought tears.

“I’ll clear this up.”

Robert was brought to the courthouse for arraignment, where he told reporters, “My wife pressured me to save her failing research investment.”

Emily had never invested in his company.

But Robert had spent years building a public image as the calm, responsible parent.

He knew how easily the world believed a confident man over an emotional mother.

That evening, Emily returned home under police escort.

The house had been searched.

Her office was destroyed.

Every personal document was gone.

On her desk sat a single envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Emily apparently entering Warehouse 214 four months earlier.

Written beneath it were the words:

May you like

YOUR DAUGHTER REMEMBERED YOU THERE.

👉 Someone had created evidence showing Emily at the secret clinic—and unless she proved the image was fake, she could lose Maya forever.
