Chapter 7 - The Locked Cabinet

Emily scanned the laboratory.
Metal drawers.
Computer terminals.
A reinforced cabinet built into the wall.
Stamped above its lock was the number 214.
She ran toward it.
Celia grabbed her hair and yanked her backward.
Emily hit the floor hard, but she kept the key clenched in her fist.
Robert raised the gun.
“Stop!”
Celia looked at him with contempt.
“You don’t have the courage.”
Emily kicked Celia’s knee, broke free, and reached the cabinet.
The key turned.
Inside sat a black data drive, dozens of medical files, and a small recorder.
Emily swept everything into her coat just as the countdown reached zero.
The monitors went black.
Celia screamed.
“You stupid woman! Do you know what that research is worth?”
Emily moved toward Maya.
“It was never worth my child.”
Robert stood between them.
His gun lowered slightly.
“I needed the investment,” he said. “The company was weeks from bankruptcy. Celia said the device only needed temporary testing.”
“You chose Maya?”
“She trusted me.”
The words destroyed whatever remained of Emily’s marriage.
Before she could answer, the front doors exploded inward.
Police flooded the lab.
Celia ran toward a rear exit.
Detective Ortiz tackled her.
Robert dropped the gun.
Emily rushed to Maya.
Her daughter’s pulse was weak, and blood had soaked through the bandage near her ribs.
Dr. Lawson entered behind the tactical officers with a trauma team.
“She needs surgery now.”
As they lifted Maya onto a stretcher, Robert reached for her hand.
Emily blocked him.
“You don’t get to touch her.”
His face twisted.
“I’m still her father.”
“No,” Maya whispered.
Everyone froze.
Her eyes had opened.
Barely conscious, she looked directly at Robert.
“A father would have believed me.”
Robert lowered his head as officers placed him in handcuffs.
Then Celia began laughing from the floor.
“You think the drive proves anything?” she said. “Robert wasn’t the one who authorized the human trials.”
Emily turned.
“Who did?”
Celia looked toward the black drive inside Emily’s coat.

“Ask the woman whose signature is on every file.”
👉 The evidence had survived, but Celia claimed the final authorization belonged to someone Emily trusted even more than Robert.
