Chapter 11 - Margaret’s Warning

Emily could barely speak.

“Where are you?”

“I can’t tell you yet.”

“You left me.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

Emily wanted to scream at her.

Instead, she looked at Maya sleeping in the hospital bed and understood the terrible shape of that choice.

Margaret explained that Celia’s father had led an illegal research program decades earlier. Margaret discovered children were being used to test implantable surveillance devices.

Before she could testify, someone murdered Emily’s father and staged Margaret’s disappearance as abandonment.

“I went underground,” Margaret said. “I believed they would stop watching you once I vanished.”

“They didn’t.”

“No. Robert found you.”

Margaret had recognized him from an old employee photograph after seeing news coverage of his arrest.

She had one surviving piece of evidence: the original laboratory ledger containing names, payments, deaths, and government contacts who protected the program.

“Bring it to the police,” Emily said.

“I tried once. The agent I contacted was killed.”

Emily’s skin went cold.

Margaret agreed to meet Detective Ortiz at an abandoned church outside the city.

Only Ortiz, Emily, and one federal prosecutor would know.

But when they arrived the next morning, the church was empty.

A chair had been overturned.

Fresh blood marked the floor.

Emily found Margaret’s scarf beside the altar.

Then Robert called from jail.

“You should have left the past alone.”

Emily gripped the phone.

“What did you do?”

“I didn’t do anything. But Celia has friends you haven’t met.”

“You used Maya.”

His voice softened.

“I made one mistake.”

“No. You made a choice every day.”

Robert sighed.

“Give them the drive and your mother lives.”

“So you know she’s alive.”

Silence.

Robert had revealed too much.

Ortiz traced the call and discovered Robert had somehow used a second phone hidden inside the detention center.

Someone in law enforcement was helping him.

Moments later, the federal prosecutor who knew about the meeting was found unconscious in his car.

His case file was gone.

👉 Margaret had been taken before she could deliver the ledger, proving Robert and Celia still had an ally powerful enough to reach inside the justice system.
