Chapter 10 - The Mother Who Disappeared

Emily’s mother, Margaret Cross, had vanished when Emily was eight years old.
Her father claimed Margaret abandoned the family.
Emily had spent thirty-two years believing it.
Now Detective Ortiz found employment records showing Margaret had worked as a biomedical auditor for the federal government.
Her final assignment involved a company that later became Robert’s firm.
“She investigated illegal pediatric trials,” Ortiz said.
Emily felt sick.
“And then she disappeared?”
“Three days before she was scheduled to testify.”
The letter from Robert’s safe had been written by Dr. Celia Voss.
It warned Robert that Emily might carry copies of her mother’s evidence without knowing it.
Robert had married Emily seven years after joining the company.
Suddenly, their accidental meeting at a charity dinner no longer felt accidental.
“He chose me because of my mother,” Emily whispered.
Ortiz nodded.
“Possibly.”
Emily remembered Robert asking strange questions early in their marriage.
Did her mother leave jewelry?
Old storage boxes?
A safety-deposit key?
Emily always assumed he was curious about her childhood.
Now she understood.
He had searched her life for evidence.
Maya’s implant had not only been a desperate financial experiment.
The device also tracked audio and location data.
Robert may have used his own daughter to monitor Emily.
Detectives searched the family home again.
Inside an old music box that had belonged to Margaret, they found a microfilm canister.
It was empty.
Robert had reached it first.
At the hospital, Maya’s condition improved enough for her to sit up.
Emily told her part of the truth.
“Your father may have entered our lives because he wanted something my mother hid.”
Maya looked devastated.
“Was any of our family real?”
Emily took her hand.
“You and I are real.”
Then Maya remembered something else.
At the clinic, Robert had argued with Dr. Voss about “the original witness.”
He had said, “She should have died thirty years ago.”
Ortiz checked old records.
Margaret Cross had never been declared dead.
Late that evening, Emily received a video call from an unknown number.
An elderly woman appeared on the screen.
Her face was lined, but Emily recognized her eyes.

“Emily,” the woman whispered. “I’m your mother.”
👉 Margaret Cross was alive—and she claimed Robert had spent years waiting for Emily to lead him directly to her.
