Chapter 14 - The Locket
Margaret pointed to the silver locket around Emily’s neck.
Emily had worn it since childhood.
“My father gave me this.”
“No,” Margaret said. “I did.”
Inside the locket was a tiny photograph of Emily at age six.
Margaret pressed the frame.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside rested a wafer-thin strip of microfilm.
Emily stared at it.
“You left this with a child?”
“I left it with the one person they would never suspect.”
Robert had spent years searching boxes, bank accounts, and storage units.
The evidence had rested against Emily’s heart every day.
Federal technicians developed the film.
The ledger documented twenty-eight illegal trials, nine deaths, millions in bribes, and a network of officials who protected the program.
Robert’s name appeared beside a payment received one month before he met Emily.
Celia’s name appeared beside Maya’s procedure.
Captain Reed’s name appeared beside destroyed police reports.
The evidence was overwhelming.
But Celia was still missing.
And Robert’s attorney claimed the ledger was fabricated.
Lauren agreed to testify that Robert hired her to impersonate Emily.
She described the fake consent videos, voice recordings, and staged clinic photograph.
Before she could enter protective custody, her motel room exploded.
Lauren survived because she had stepped outside to call Ortiz.
The explosion proved Celia was still eliminating witnesses.
Robert requested a private meeting with Emily.
Against legal advice, she went.
He sat behind thick glass in the detention center.
“You think that ledger saves you?” he asked.
“It saves Maya.”
“You don’t understand Celia. She’ll destroy everyone before she goes to prison.”
“Then help us find her.”
Robert looked away.
Emily saw fear.
Real fear.
“She has access to Riverside’s central oxygen system,” he said. “She designed the controls.”
Maya and dozens of children were still recovering in that hospital.
Emily stood so quickly her chair fell.
Robert pressed his hand to the glass.
