Chapter 2 - The Night Maya Couldn’t Remember

Robert laughed, but the sound was strained.
“That’s ridiculous.”
Maya turned her face toward the wall.
Dr. Lawson removed the ultrasound probe and covered her carefully.
“Maya,” he said gently, “why do you believe your father knows?”
Robert stepped closer to the bed.
“She’s frightened. Don’t put ideas in her head.”
Emily stood between him and their daughter.
“No one asked you.”
Robert’s expression changed.
For one second, the dismissive husband disappeared, replaced by someone cold and calculating.
Then his smile returned.
“Maya,” Emily said softly, “tell me what happened.”
The girl swallowed hard.
“Four months ago, Dad took me to a private clinic.”
Emily froze.
Robert had told her Maya was spending that weekend at a friend’s house.
“What clinic?” she asked.
“I don’t know. I woke up in the car afterward. My stomach hurt, and there was a bandage near my ribs.”
Robert shook his head.
“She had a panic attack. I took her to urgent care.”
“Which urgent care?” Dr. Lawson asked.
Robert hesitated.
Emily saw it.
So did the doctor.
Maya’s breathing grew faster.
“He told me not to tell you,” she whispered. “He said you’d think I was mentally ill.”
Emily’s hand flew to her mouth.
Robert moved toward the door.
“This conversation is over. We’re getting a second opinion.”
Dr. Lawson blocked him.
“No one is moving Maya until we perform a CT scan.”
“You don’t have my permission.”
“I don’t need yours when delaying care could endanger her life.”
Robert reached for Maya’s medical file.
Emily caught his wrist.
“Don’t touch it.”
For the first time in seventeen years of marriage, Robert looked at her with open hatred.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message appeared across the locked screen.
Emily saw only six words before Robert turned it over.
