Chapter 4 - The Object on the Scan
The CT results arrived less than an hour later.
Dr. Lawson entered with pediatric surgeon Dr. Nina Patel. Neither looked relieved.
Emily stood.
“Tell me.”
Dr. Patel placed the scan on the screen.
A small rectangular object sat beneath Maya’s left rib cage, surrounded by infected tissue.
“It resembles a tracking capsule,” she said. “But it is larger than any approved medical implant I recognize.”
Emily stared at the image.
“Tracking?”
“Possibly location or biometric data. We won’t know until it’s removed.”
Maya’s voice shook.
“Someone put that inside me?”
Dr. Patel nodded reluctantly.
“We need surgery tonight. The infection is spreading.”
Emily signed the consent forms with trembling hands.
Robert had still not returned.
Instead, he sent dozens of messages.
You’re panicking.
Lawson is exaggerating.
Do not authorize surgery without me.
Then came the threat.
If you let them remove it, Maya will regret it.
Emily showed the message to Dr. Lawson.
He immediately contacted hospital security and child protective services.
Two detectives arrived twenty minutes later.
Detective Lena Ortiz listened as Maya described the private clinic: white walls, no windows, a woman wearing red-framed glasses, and Robert arguing with someone behind a door.
“What were they arguing about?” Ortiz asked.
Maya closed her eyes.
“I heard Dad say, ‘She wasn’t supposed to wake up.’”
Emily felt the floor shift beneath her.
Maya continued.
“Then another man said, ‘The device needs a living host.’”
The detectives exchanged a look.
Dr. Patel prepared Maya for surgery.
As nurses wheeled her toward the operating room, Emily bent close.
“I’ll be here when you wake up.”
Maya caught her sleeve.
“Mom, the key.”
Emily held up the evidence bag.
“I won’t lose it.”
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“Dad searched my room every night after that weekend. Maybe he was looking for it.”
The elevator doors closed around her.
Seconds later, Emily’s phone rang from an unknown number.
