Chapter 10 - The Box Ryan Never Opened
Ryan left the hall only after Admiral Vale granted a brief recess.
He called his wife, Lauren.
“Go to the storage unit.”
She heard the panic in his voice.
“What am I looking for?”
“A box marked RYAN—PERSONAL. It may contain a cedar box.”
Lauren drove there immediately.
Inside the ceremony hall, Earl demanded that security remove Caroline.
No one moved.
“You cannot let her use Navy rank to attack family,” he said.
Admiral Vale answered quietly.
“She has not attacked anyone.”
Earl pointed toward his daughter.
“She threatened me.”
Caroline’s expression remained still.
“What did I say?”
Earl opened his mouth.
Nothing came.
The security officers had witnessed the entire confrontation.
Earl crushed the card.
Earl shoved it against Caroline’s chest.
Earl grabbed her arm.
Caroline had only removed his hand.
Ryan returned from the corridor.
He looked older than he had ten minutes earlier.
“Dad, where is Mom’s cedar box?”
Earl’s eyes shifted.
“What box?”
“The one from her bedroom.”
“I threw it away.”
Ryan lifted his phone.
“Lauren found it.”
Earl went silent.
The family friend Margaret stood slowly from her seat.
She remembered the box.
Elaine once told her it contained letters for the children.
Ryan put the call on speaker.
Lauren’s voice filled the aisle.
“There are photographs of Caroline in uniform. Graduation, promotions, deployments…”
Paper moved near the phone.
“And a letter from your mother.”
Earl stepped toward Ryan.
“Turn that off.”
Ryan backed away.
The security officers moved between them.
