Two weeks after the ceremony, Ryan met Caroline at a Navy legal office.
She brought copies of financial transfers, hospital records, and letters from Elaine.
Not to humiliate Earl.

Ryan read every document.
Caroline had sent more than two hundred thousand dollars over twenty years.

“He knew where the money came from,” Ryan whispered.

“Why didn’t you stop?”

“Not your entire childhood.”
“Enough of it.”
He asked whether Caroline wanted the money back.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because it served its purpose when it was sent.”
Ryan stared at her.
She refused to turn generosity into a new form of control.
That difference separated her from Earl more than rank ever could.
The legal office preserved certified copies.
Elaine’s letter was scanned and shared with both children.
