Chapter 7 - Earl’s Warning Before the Ceremony

Earl reached the ceremony hall early.
He told several guests that his daughter might appear wearing a fake or ceremonial uniform.
“She has always wanted attention,” he said.
“She lasted two weeks in training and never recovered from the shame.”
Margaret Lewis, an old family friend, laughed politely.
Others nodded without knowing what to believe.
Earl even warned a junior security officer near the entrance.
“If a woman named Caroline Mercer claims to be senior Navy personnel, check her identification carefully.”
The officer did.
Caroline presented a valid military card.
The young sailor looked at the rank, straightened instantly, and saluted.
“Welcome, Admiral.”
Earl saw the salute.
His expression changed for half a second.
Then he convinced himself the officer had been fooled.
When Caroline entered the hall, several senior personnel recognized her.
Small conversations stopped.
Postures straightened.
Earl interpreted the reactions as curiosity toward her uniform.
He moved into the aisle before she could reach Ryan.
“You were told not to come dressed like this.”
Caroline kept her voice low.
“Step aside.”
“Not until you stop pretending.”
He demanded her identification.
Caroline should have refused.
Instead, she removed it, believing the proof might finally end the argument quietly.
Earl stared at the card.
The title beneath her name read Rear Admiral.
He saw it clearly.
Then he threw it onto the floor.
The act was not confusion.
It was desperation.
If the card was real, his entire identity as the father who had always been right collapsed.

So he placed his shoe over it.
👉 Earl did not crush the ID because he doubted Caroline—he crushed it because he finally knew she was telling the truth.
