Chapter 19 - The Last Conversation With Earl

Earl requested a meeting with Caroline three months later.
She chose a public café near the naval base.
Ryan attended but sat at another table.
Earl arrived without apology.
“You turned my son against me.”
Caroline stirred her coffee.
“Ryan examined evidence.”
“You humiliated me.”
“You crushed my identification card in front of two thousand people.”
“You should never have come.”
“It was a Navy ceremony. I was invited by the presiding admiral.”
Earl leaned forward.
“You enjoyed watching everyone stand.”
“No.”
He searched her face.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I expected you to stop when you saw the card.”
Earl looked away.
For the first time, Caroline asked the question directly.
“Why did you lie?”
He remained silent.
“Why tell everyone I failed?”
His voice finally lowered.
“Because your mother looked at you differently after you graduated.”
Caroline waited.
“She was proud of you.”
“She was proud of Ryan too.”
“Not the same way.”
There it was.
Not concern.
Not abandonment.
Jealousy.
Earl could not tolerate admiration he did not control.
“If you became important,” he said, “what did that make me?”
Caroline’s answer was quiet.
“My father.”
“That wasn’t enough.”
“No.”
Earl’s eyes filled with anger and grief.
He had traded his daughter for the feeling of superiority.
Now he wanted sympathy for the emptiness that followed.
“Will you forgive me?”
Caroline looked at him.
“Do you believe you were wrong?”
He hesitated.
That hesitation was the answer.
“I can forgive what happened without allowing it to happen again.”
She stood.
Earl remained seated.
Ryan did not approach him.
