Chapter 13 - The Sealed Investigation
Earl’s fear turned into calculation.
He remembered something Caroline once said during a rare family phone call.
Part of her record was classified.
He seized it immediately.
“Ask her what she did overseas,” he shouted.
Caroline’s gaze sharpened.
Earl looked toward the guests.
“She hides behind sealed files. Maybe she isn’t a hero. Maybe those medals cover what she did.”
Ryan stared at him.
“Stop.”
But Earl continued.
“She came home once with blood on her uniform and refused to explain.”
Caroline remembered the day.
She had returned from an operation and visited Elaine before reporting back.
Earl saw damaged fabric and assumed scandal.
The mission involved civilians trapped during an attack.
Details remained protected.
Admiral Vale stepped forward.
“Mr. Mercer, classified records are not evidence of misconduct.”
“How do we know?”
“Because I reviewed the operation.”
Earl’s face changed.
Vale’s voice remained calm.
“Rear Admiral Mercer led a rescue corridor after communication systems failed. She remained exposed while wounded personnel and civilians were evacuated.”
Caroline’s jaw tightened.
Vale did not reveal restricted details.
He did not need to.
“The Silver Star was awarded for that action.”
Earl looked at the medal he had just called meaningless.
Ryan whispered, “She was saving people.”
Earl searched for another attack.
“She still abandoned her family.”
Admiral Vale answered before Caroline could.
“During that same deployment, she transferred emergency compensation to an Ohio medical account.”
Earl went silent.
The transfer had saved Elaine’s treatment program.
Caroline had managed a crisis overseas while supporting the family that publicly rejected her.
The guests no longer looked amused.
