Chapter 17 - The Apology Without Excuses
After the ceremony, Ryan found Caroline near an empty side corridor.
She had removed her white cap but remained in uniform.
He stopped several feet away.
“May I speak with you?”
“Yes.”
Ryan took a breath.
“I believed Dad because believing him benefited me.”
Caroline watched him carefully.
“I got to be the successful child. Every time he insulted you, I felt more important.”
He did not blame youth.
He did not blame manipulation alone.
“I was old enough to question it. I chose not to.”
Caroline’s expression softened slightly.
“That is the first honest thing you have said to me today.”
“I am sorry.”
“I believe you regret it.”
“That isn’t forgiveness.”
“No.”
Ryan nodded.
“What do I do now?”
“Correct the lie wherever you repeated it.”
His face tightened.
“That may damage my reputation.”
“Yes.”
She did not rescue him.
Ryan understood.
A private apology could not repair public humiliation.
He would have to tell fellow officers that the story he shared was false.
He would have to explain that he mocked a senior officer without checking facts.
He would have to accept what that revealed about his judgment.
“I’ll do it.”
Caroline looked toward the hall.
“Then do it because it is right, not because you expect me to reward you.”
Ryan swallowed.
“I want my sister back.”
“You never knew your sister.”
The words hurt.
Then she added, “But you can begin now.”

For the first time since childhood, they stood together without Earl’s version of either of them between them.
