Chapter 11 - Elaine’s Final Truth
Lauren read slowly.
My dear Caroline and Ryan,
If you are reading this, then I am no longer able to tell you myself.
Your sister did not fail military training.
She graduated with distinction.
She stayed away because your father told her she could return only if she admitted failure.
Ryan closed his eyes.
Lauren continued.
Caroline paid for my treatments.
She visited whenever her orders allowed.
She also helped save Earl’s business and paid for many things we allowed Ryan to believe came from us.
Earl moved suddenly.
“Stop reading.”
Admiral Vale raised one hand.
“Remain where you are.”
Lauren’s voice became emotional.
I let fear keep me silent.
That was my failure.
Earl believed Caroline’s success diminished him. He accepted her help privately while insulting her publicly.
Do not inherit his pride.
Do not let his version of our family become stronger than the truth.
The hall was completely silent.
Ryan looked at his father.
“Did you take her money?”
Earl’s jaw clenched.
“I supported this family.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“She owed us.”
Caroline’s eyes changed.
For the first time, restrained fury became visible.
“Owed you?”
“You left.”
“You forced me out.”
“You always thought you were better than us.”
“No,” Caroline said. “You were afraid I might become someone you could not control.”
Earl’s face reddened.
Ryan looked at the muddy identification card still in Caroline’s hand.
Then at the Silver Star.
Then at his own diploma on the floor.
His pride transformed into shame.
“I repeated your lie,” he whispered.
Earl answered immediately.
“Because you were loyal.”
Ryan looked up.
