Chapter 5 - The Letter in the Cedar Box
After Elaine’s funeral, Earl carried a cedar box from the bedroom into his locked office.
Inside were letters Caroline had sent during deployments.
Photographs.
Medical-payment receipts.
A handwritten message addressed to both children.
Earl read the letter alone.
Elaine wrote that Caroline had never failed the Navy.
She described the money Caroline sent and the visits she made during treatment.
She also admitted that Earl had forbidden her from speaking openly about Caroline’s career.
Elaine ended with one request:
Do not let your father’s pride turn you against each other.
Earl folded the letter and locked it away.
He told Ryan the box contained private marital papers.
For years, it remained untouched.
Then Earl’s business failed.
He sold the family house and moved into a smaller property.
Most belongings went into storage.
The cedar box disappeared.
Earl believed it had been discarded.
It had not.
A moving-company employee found it behind a broken cabinet and placed it inside a box marked RYAN—PERSONAL.
Ryan stored that box unopened while advancing through his own Navy career.
He wanted Earl’s approval more than he wanted family history.
Every promotion became proof that he was different from Caroline.
More serious.
More loyal.
More capable.
Earl encouraged the comparison.
“My son finished what my daughter couldn’t.”
Ryan repeated the joke around fellow sailors.
He did not know some of them had served under Rear Admiral Caroline Mercer.
They assumed he referred to another sister.
