Chapter 8 - The Hall Stands

When Admiral Vale called Caroline forward, every officer rose.

Not because of spectacle.

Because she was the ranking flag officer being formally recognized.

Earl looked around at the white uniforms filling the hall.

Some officers stood with admiration.

Others with anger.

A few had served under Caroline during operations Earl would never understand.

Ryan remained frozen beside his fallen diploma.

Admiral Vale extended his hand.

“Rear Admiral Mercer.”

Caroline accepted it.

Then Vale looked at the mud on her identification card.

His jaw tightened.

“Is there a security issue?”

Caroline answered without looking at Earl.

“No immediate threat.”

Earl laughed weakly.

“This is a family misunderstanding.”

Two naval security officers moved closer.

Admiral Vale faced the audience.

“For those who have not met her, Rear Admiral Caroline Mercer currently oversees operational readiness coordination across multiple Pacific commands.”

The hall remained silent.

“She has served for twenty-eight years.”

Ryan looked down at his own uniform.

He had spent his entire career believing Caroline could not survive fourteen days.

Vale continued.

“She has been awarded the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, and multiple commendations for command under hostile conditions.”

Earl’s weathered face turned pale.

Caroline had never asked for a public biography.

But Vale understood that silence now protected the wrong person.

Ryan stepped toward her.

“Caroline…”

She turned.

He could barely speak.

“Why did Dad say you quit?”

Caroline looked past him at Earl.

“Ask him.”
