Chapter 14 - The Silver Star

Ryan had seen Silver Stars before.
He understood the criteria.
Gallantry in action.
Extraordinary courage.
But he had never asked Caroline about the one she wore.
Earl had taught him that her medals were decorative pieces purchased for ceremonial events.
Ryan knew how absurd that sounded now.
He stepped closer.
“Were you injured?”
Caroline’s eyes moved toward him.
“That is not relevant today.”
“It is to me.”
She paused.
“Yes.”
“Did Mom know?”
“Yes.”
“Did Dad?”
Caroline looked at Earl.
“He saw the recovery paperwork.”
Ryan turned toward his father.
“You knew about the medal?”
Earl’s silence answered.
He had known Caroline did not fail.
He had known she served.
He had known she was decorated.
Perhaps he did not understand the full rank structure, but he understood enough.
“You knew,” Ryan repeated.
Earl finally snapped.
“She was supposed to come home!”
Caroline’s control tightened.
“And surrender my career?”
“You were my daughter.”
“I still am.”
“A daughter does not choose strangers over family.”
“They were sailors under my command.”
“You chose them.”
“I chose my duty.”
Earl’s weathered face twisted with resentment.
“That is why Ryan was always better.”
Ryan stepped between them.
“No.”
Earl stared at him.
Ryan continued.
“You preferred me because I needed your approval.”
The statement landed with brutal accuracy.
Caroline never let Earl define her worth.
Ryan had spent his life doing exactly that.
Earl looked around the hall.
His daughter outranked nearly everyone.
His son no longer defended him.
His wife’s letter had exposed him.

The audience he expected to impress now saw him clearly.
👉 With nowhere left to hide, Earl made one final attempt to physically stop Caroline from receiving her recognition.
