Chapter 1 - The Empty NICU

“Where are they?”

Mark Carter lunged toward the locked NICU doors before Nurse Lauren could answer.

His hand closed around her upper arm.

Lauren trapped his wrist, pivoted, and shoved him hard in the center of the chest.

Mark stumbled backward and crashed hip-first into an empty hospital gurney.

The metal frame rattled through the bright corridor.

His pastel baby gift bag swung from one hand. His black phone nearly slipped from the other.

Behind the glass walls of NICU Station 4, masked nurses moved quietly between three empty bassinets.

No babies.

No Emily.

Mark pushed himself upright.

“Where are my wife and children?”

Lauren stepped between him and the entrance.

Her voice was cold.

“You still don’t know?”

His anger stopped.

“Know what?”

Several feet away, Emily’s mother stood clutching folded infant blankets against her chest.

Her tear-streaked face showed no relief at seeing him.

Only exhaustion.

Mark looked from her to the empty bassinets.

He had expected to return to a frightened wife, three premature babies, and a room full of people grateful that he had finally appeared.

Instead, Emily’s flowers lay abandoned on the floor.

Her maternity room had been stripped.

Even her hospital bracelet was gone.

Lauren took a dark discharge folder from a counter and slammed it onto the gurney.

Mark reached for it.

She covered it with one hand.

Emily’s mother stepped forward and placed an empty bracelet on top of the folder.

Then a sealed cream envelope.

Finally, she removed a partially hidden photograph from the blankets.

The image was blurred from Mark’s angle, but he recognized the setting immediately.

The Fairfield Country Club.

A white celebration cake.

His dark jacket sleeve.

And Madison’s hand resting over his as they held a silver knife together.

His phone fell from his hand.

Emily’s mother watched it hit the polished floor.

“She saw the video before surgery.”

Mark’s face lost color.

A smaller envelope with a red legal seal slid from beneath the discharge papers.

His relief that Emily and the babies had survived disappeared instantly.

A notification illuminated his fallen phone.

Another video thumbnail.

Another piece of evidence.

Emily’s mother stepped backward.

“Ask Madison why.”

Mark stared at the glowing screen.

Because Madison was not merely the woman he had been seeing behind Emily’s back.
