Chapter 2 - The Celebration He Chose

Six hours earlier, Emily had been alone in a private maternity room when the first contraction tore through her body.

She was thirty-three weeks pregnant with triplets.

Her pregnancy had been classified as high risk from the beginning.

Doctors had warned Mark that labor could become dangerous without notice.

That morning, Emily asked him to stay close.

He kissed her forehead and said he needed one hour.

“A client is in town.”

Emily knew he was lying.

She had seen the expensive cuff links inside his jacket pocket.

She had smelled a woman’s perfume on his shirt the night before.

But she was too tired to fight.

“Please don’t turn off your phone,” she said.

Mark smiled.

“I won’t.”

He left with the pastel gift bag still in the trunk of his car.

At 11:17 a.m., Emily’s blood pressure dropped.

At 11:24, the fetal monitors showed distress.

Nurses called Mark repeatedly.

His phone went straight to voicemail.

At noon, doctors told Emily they could no longer wait.

The babies had to be delivered immediately.

Emily signed the surgical consent forms with a trembling hand.

“Has my husband called back?”

Lauren looked at her communication device.

“No.”

Emily tried to remain calm.

Then her phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

The first attachment was a video.

It showed Mark standing beside Madison Hayes at Fairfield Country Club.

A cake between them.

Champagne glasses raised around them.

Madison’s friends cheering as Mark leaned down and kissed her.

The white icing read something Emily could not fully see before her vision blurred.

But she heard one woman behind the camera say:

“To the future Mrs. Carter.”

Emily stopped breathing.

The second attachment was not romantic.

It was a photograph of a financial document bearing Emily’s forged signature.

The message beneath it read:

“He plans to file this while you’re in surgery.”

Lauren entered as Emily tried to stand.

Pain folded her in half.

“What happened?”

Emily handed her the phone.

Lauren watched only ten seconds before calling hospital security.

Then a third message arrived.

This time, Madison identified herself.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know what he was doing until last night.”

Emily stared at the operating-room doors.

Mark had not simply abandoned her for another woman’s celebration.

He had chosen the exact hour of her surgery to activate a legal plan.

And Madison had discovered it too late.

👉 The forged document gave Mark control if Emily died in surgery—but it also contained a clause that would let him take the triplets even if she survived.
