Chapter 9 - The Trust Emily Never Knew About
Emily’s grandfather had built a regional pharmacy company before selling it decades earlier.
Most of the family believed the fortune had been divided.
It had not.
A portion was placed in a generation-skipping trust for Emily and any children she might have.
The trust could not be accessed until Emily turned thirty-five or gave birth to a living child.
Emily was thirty-four.
The triplets activated the second condition.

She had never known.
Her father died when she was young.
Her mother, Diane, knew a small trust existed but not its value.
The trustee was Madison’s father, Richard Hayes.

Madison did not fully review them until Mark began asking questions.
Mark discovered the trust through an old tax document in Emily’s files.
He started dating Madison because he believed she could help him gain control.
He told her Emily wanted to restructure the trust for their children.

The forged custody agreement was designed to do more than move the babies.
If Emily died or was declared incapacitated, Mark could petition to manage the children’s inherited interests.
He would control the trust through them.
Madison found that clause the night before the country-club celebration.
That was why she finally understood the scale of his plan.
He had not chosen her because he loved her.

Madison told investigators that Mark repeatedly asked what would happen if Emily did not survive childbirth.
At first, she believed he was terrified.
