Chapter 7 - The Storage Unit

Mark entered the storage facility using a key hidden inside his watchband.

Police watched from an unmarked vehicle.

He opened Unit 314.

Inside were three packed suitcases.

A portable bassinet.

Boxes of infant formula.

A folder containing three passport applications.

And a black garment bag.

When officers searched the unit later, the garment bag contained a dark suit prepared for Mark.

Beside it hung a black dress in Emily’s size.

A label identified it as funeral attire.

There was also a framed photograph of Mark and the triplets’ ultrasound image.

Emily had been cropped out.

Mark did not know he was being watched.

He opened a metal lockbox and checked the contents.

Cash.

A second phone.

Foreign currency.

And a flash drive.

He called Madison.

“Where is Emily?”

Madison’s voice was being recorded by police.

“I don’t know.”

“You sent her the video.”

“I sent her the truth.”

“You ruined everything.”

“You planned to take her children.”

“They’re my children.”

“You wrote her obituary.”

Silence.

Mark lowered his voice.

“That was contingency planning.”

“For her death?”

“She was high risk.”

“You were counting on it.”

Mark slammed the lockbox shut.

Then he said the sentence investigators needed.

“If she had died, none of this would be a problem.”

Madison stopped breathing.

Police did not move yet.

A cruel statement was not enough to prove he caused the medical emergency.

Then Madison asked about the medication.

Mark’s head snapped toward the storage-unit entrance.

“What medication?”

“The pills you switched.”

Mark ended the call.

He grabbed the flash drive and ran.

Officers moved in.

Mark knocked over the portable bassinet trying to reach the exit.

He was detained before he reached his car.

The flash drive contained financial records and private messages.

But the most important evidence was hidden on the second phone.

Messages between Mark and an employee at Emily’s fertility clinic.

Mark had paid for access to her medication schedule.

One message read:

“Reduce the dose two days before delivery. It should trigger the outcome we discussed.”

Emily’s emergency had not been bad luck.
