Chapter 10 - The Recording He Thought Would Save Him
The recording was made two weeks before the birth.
Emily’s voice sounded exhausted.
“I can’t do this anymore.”
Mark’s attorney played the sentence twice.
He argued that Emily intended to abandon the pregnancy and lacked the stability to control the trust.
Then the recording continued.
Mark’s voice appeared in the background.
“You don’t have a choice.”
Emily said, “I need help.”
“You need to stop embarrassing me.”
“I’m scared.”
“Then sign the papers.”
The courtroom became silent.
Mark’s attorney tried to stop the audio.
Thomas objected.
The judge ordered it played in full.
For eleven minutes, Mark pressured Emily to sign medical and financial documents.
He threatened to tell doctors she was suicidal.
He said no one would believe her because pregnancy had made her irrational.
At one point, Emily asked why he kept discussing what would happen if she died.
Mark answered:
“Because someone has to be practical.”
The recording did not prove murder.
It proved coercion.
It proved that Emily understood what was happening.
And it proved Mark had lied about her mental state.
The court-appointed psychologist testified that Emily showed trauma symptoms but remained competent, logical, and deeply focused on her children’s safety.
The judge granted Emily sole temporary custody and full control over her medical decisions.
Mark was prohibited from contacting her or the triplets.
His access to the trust was permanently blocked pending trial.
Outside court, reporters waited.
The story had become public.
Absent husband.
Emergency surgery.
Empty NICU.
Forged documents.
A secret fortune.
Emily did not speak to the cameras.
Diane guided her through a private exit.
Madison did speak.
She admitted her role.
“I believed a married man because believing him gave me the life I wanted,” she said. “That does not excuse what I helped him do.”
Her statement divided public opinion.
Some called her brave.
Others called her an accomplice.
Emily saw her as both.
Madison had contributed to the trap.
Then she helped expose it.
Justice did not require pretending those facts canceled each other.
Meanwhile, prosecutors searched Mark’s financial records.
They discovered one payment made the morning Emily entered labor.
It went to a private pilot.
The flight plan was filed for Canada.
Four passengers were listed.
