Chapter 6 - The Envelope on the Gurney

The sealed cream envelope contained a single handwritten note.
Mark,
I know about the documents.
I know about the transport.
I know where the money went.
Do not look for us.
Emily
The smaller envelope with the red seal contained an emergency court order.
Mark was temporarily prohibited from making medical or travel decisions for the triplets.
He was also barred from entering Emily’s room or accessing hospital records.
But Diane did not give him the order immediately.
Thomas wanted to see how Mark reacted before he understood the court had intervened.
When Mark arrived, he carried a pastel gift bag and wore the same clothes from the country-club celebration.
Frosting remained on his sleeve.
His first question was not whether Emily survived.
It was not whether the babies were healthy.
It was:
“Where are they?”
Lauren blocked him.
He grabbed her.
She pushed him back.
The confrontation rattled the corridor.
Then Diane showed him the photograph.
“She saw the video before surgery.”
Mark’s expression revealed more than anger.
He looked betrayed.
Not by Emily.
By Madison.
The second envelope slid from the discharge folder.
Mark recognized the court seal.
His phone vibrated on the floor.
A new message appeared from Madison.
Diane could not read it, but Mark could.
His eyes widened.
He snatched up the phone.
The message contained a photograph of the hidden laptop folder.
Beneath it, Madison had written:
“I gave them everything.”
Mark stared at Diane.
“Where is Emily?”
Diane said nothing.
“Did Madison tell you where she went?”
“Ask Madison why.”
Mark’s face changed.
He believed Madison knew Emily’s location.
He also believed she had taken something more valuable than evidence.
He rushed toward the elevator.
The police officers waiting near the stairwell allowed him to leave.
They had been instructed not to arrest him yet.
Because investigators were tracking his phone.
Mark did exactly what Thomas predicted.
He did not call a lawyer.
He did not call the hospital administrator.
He called Madison.
Then he drove directly to the country club.
Officers followed at a distance.
Diane watched the elevator doors close.
Lauren turned toward her.
“Do you think he’ll confess?”
Diane looked at the envelope he had left unopened on the gurney.
“No.”
Then she looked at the phone-tracking map Thomas had shared.

“But I think he’ll lead them to whatever he’s most afraid of losing.”
👉 Mark did not drive to Madison’s home—he drove to a storage facility containing three infant passports and a suitcase packed for Emily’s funeral.
