Chapter 11 - The Case Evelyn Never Forgot
Miriam accused Evelyn of burying evidence during the fraud investigation that first connected her to William Ashford.
The board members exchanged nervous looks.
If the accusation were true, Evelyn’s authority over the trust could be challenged.
Garrick’s smile returned.
“You’re not the righteous savior she thinks you are.”
Evelyn remained silent for several seconds.
Then she asked Charles to open the second compartment of the sealed envelope.
Inside was a written disclosure.
Years earlier, William Ashford discovered that one of the company’s senior executives had diverted funds from employee retirement accounts.
The executive was Miriam’s brother.
Miriam begged William to handle the matter privately.
William refused.
Evelyn led the federal investigation.
But before charges were filed, Miriam’s brother died by suicide.
Several records disappeared from company storage.
The investigation ended without proving who else had participated.
Miriam had always believed Evelyn suppressed those records to protect William.
In truth, Evelyn had preserved copies.
She placed them under court seal because they implicated people who had not yet been charged.
The seal expired the previous year.
Evelyn had already delivered the complete file to federal investigators.
Charles looked at Miriam.
“Your name was in those records.”
Miriam’s face crumpled.
She had authorized false accounting entries decades earlier.
William chose not to expose her publicly because Garrick was still a child.
Instead, he removed her financial authority and created the trust protector position.
Evelyn had not hidden Miriam’s guilt.
William had delayed its consequences.
Garrick’s final weapon disappeared.
“You’re lying,” Miriam whispered.
Evelyn shook her head.
“You have spent thirty years confusing mercy with innocence.”
The officers escorted Miriam into the corridor.
Garrick followed separately.
As he passed Sienna, he stopped.
“This family will destroy you too.”
Sienna looked at him without fear.
“No. Your family taught me what I will never become.”
He was taken away.
The dining room fell silent again.
The spilled food remained across the table.
The overturned tray rested beside Garrick’s empty chair.
Sienna looked at the place where she had been forced to serve him.
Then she asked the question she had been afraid to ask.
“What happens to my children now?”
Evelyn embraced her carefully.
“You take them somewhere safe.”
But Garrick’s attorney filed an emergency petition before midnight.
