Chapter 2 - The People in the Doorway

The dark wooden doors opened inward.

Two uniformed police officers entered first.

Their hands remained away from their weapons. They did not rush or shout.

They simply stepped into the room with the calm authority of people who already knew why they had been called.

Behind them stood five senior members of the Ashford Industries board.

Garrick recognized every one of them.

Charles Pembroke, the board chairman.

Daniel Ross, the company’s chief financial officer.

Three directors who were expected to vote for Garrick’s promotion the following morning.

Miriam’s wineglass froze halfway to her lips.

Garrick’s pointing hand dropped.

“What is this?” he demanded.

Sienna’s mother drew her daughter closer.

“Your promotion is canceled.”

Garrick stared at her.

For a moment, he could not speak.

Then he laughed.

It was too loud and too forced.

“You don’t have the authority to cancel anything.”

Charles Pembroke stepped forward.

“She does tonight.”

Sienna looked at her mother in confusion.

Her mother had always lived modestly in a quiet Connecticut town. She wore elegant clothes, but never flaunted wealth. She rarely discussed her former career.

Sienna knew she had once worked in law.

She did not know why the board chairman of Ashford Industries appeared to be waiting for her instructions.

Miriam placed her wineglass down.

“Garrick has done nothing wrong,” she said. “His wife is unstable. Pregnancy has made her emotional.”

One officer glanced at the overturned food.

Then at Sienna’s sling.

Then at the faint marks above her wrist.

Garrick noticed.

“She fell,” he said quickly.

Sienna’s mother looked at her daughter.

“You just told us you didn’t.”

Garrick stepped around the chair.

“Sienna is confused.”

“No,” Sienna whispered.

Everyone turned toward her.

Her eyes were wet, but her voice became steadier.

“He pushed me.”

Miriam stood so quickly that her chair shifted backward.

“Think carefully before you destroy your family.”

Sienna flinched.

Her mother did not.

“My daughter is not destroying this family,” she said. “She is describing what your son did to it.”

Garrick looked toward the board members.

“This is a private marital disagreement.”

Charles’s expression hardened.

“Not when company money was used to hide it.”

The words landed harder than the tray.

Garrick slowly turned pale.

Sienna looked at him.

“What company money?”

No one answered immediately.

And in that silence, she realized her injury was only one piece of something much larger.

👉 The board had discovered secret payments made after Sienna’s hospitalization—but the name receiving the money belonged to someone she trusted.
