Chapter 14 - The Ticket for a Child Not Yet Born
The third ticket changed the entire case.
Garrick had reserved international travel for a date six weeks after Sienna’s expected delivery.
The infant passenger was listed under Elise’s surname.
Investigators found draft documents declaring that Sienna had suffered a psychiatric crisis after giving birth.
The plan was horrifyingly clear.
Garrick intended to use the forged custody waiver and false medical records to take the newborn.
He would tell authorities that Sienna was hospitalized.
Then he would leave the country with Elise and the baby.
Leo was not included in the travel plan.
Garrick planned to leave him behind with Miriam.
Sienna realized her husband had separated her children in his mind before either custody order existed.
Her unborn daughter was an asset.
Leo was an inconvenience.
When confronted with the ticket, Garrick finally blamed Miriam.
He claimed she designed the custody strategy.
Miriam blamed Elise.
Elise blamed Garrick.
Their alliance collapsed completely.
Each of them began producing evidence against the others.
Recordings.
Emails.
Bank instructions.
Photographs.
No one protected anyone anymore.
Garrick eventually accepted a plea agreement after prosecutors threatened additional federal charges.
He received a lengthy prison sentence.
He surrendered his company shares, the river mansion, the offshore accounts, and every asset connected to the fraud.
A separate family court order terminated his decision-making authority over Sienna’s pregnancy.
Any future request for contact with the children would require extensive evaluation after his release.
Miriam pleaded guilty to conspiracy, obstruction, and financial crimes.
Her age reduced her prison term, but it did not erase it.
Elise received a shorter sentence after cooperating, followed by supervised release.
Dr. Vale lost his medical license and was convicted of falsifying records and accepting an illegal payment.
Ashford Industries recovered most of the missing money.
Evelyn declined to become permanent chairwoman.
Instead, she nominated Charles to lead the company while an independent ethics office was established.
Sienna was offered a position on the board.
She declined.
At least for the moment.
“I’ve spent too long surviving decisions made in that building,” she said. “I need to make decisions for myself.”
Then, on a quiet morning in early spring, Sienna went into labor.
Evelyn remained beside her.
And when the baby cried for the first time, Sienna realized Garrick had failed to take the most important thing from her.
