Chapter 9 - The Thirty-Eight Percent

Sienna’s mother removed a sealed envelope from her purse.
Garrick watched it as if it contained a weapon.
In a way, it did.
William Ashford had created a family voting trust shortly before his death.
Miriam believed she controlled its largest block of shares.
Garrick believed he would inherit that control when he became company president.
Both were wrong.
The trust granted thirty-eight percent voting authority to an independent protector.
That protector was Sienna’s mother.
Her name was Evelyn Mercer.
For most of her career, Evelyn had served as a federal prosecutor specializing in corporate fraud.
Years earlier, she helped William investigate an executive who had been stealing from Ashford Industries.
William trusted her judgment.
When Sienna later married Garrick, Evelyn withdrew from direct involvement to avoid interfering in her daughter’s marriage.
But she never surrendered her legal authority.
She simply chose not to use it.
Until Garrick pushed Sienna down the stairs.
Garrick’s voice became unsteady.
“You’ve been controlling the trust this entire time?”
“No,” Evelyn said. “I have been protecting it.”
“You had no right to interfere with my promotion.”
“I had a duty to interfere when you stole from the company.”
Miriam stared at Evelyn.
“You allowed me to believe those votes were mine.”
“William allowed you to believe it because he feared you would use the company to protect Garrick from consequences.”
Miriam looked away.
William had understood both of them.
Even in death.
Charles explained that Evelyn had exercised the trust’s emergency clause that morning.
Garrick’s promotion vote was canceled.
His executive authority was suspended.
All major accounts were frozen.
The midnight transfer could not occur.
Garrick had lost the company before he struck the serving tray.
He simply had not known it yet.
Sienna looked at her mother.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I wanted you to build your own marriage, not live under my power.”
Evelyn’s composure finally cracked.
“I thought distance would protect you from the conflicts surrounding that family. I did not realize it left you isolated.”
Sienna squeezed her hand.
“You came when I needed you.”
Evelyn looked at Garrick.
“I should have come sooner.”
One of the officers received a message.
The damaged phone had automatically backed up several audio files.
The final recording began six minutes before Sienna’s fall.

And Garrick’s voice was perfectly clear.
👉 The recovered audio proved Garrick had threatened Sienna before the staircase—but Miriam’s voice on the recording revealed she had been inside the house too.
