Chapter 13 - Miriam’s Last Bargain
Miriam gave prosecutors access to a private safe inside the Ashford estate.
Inside were copies of the forged custody waiver, company transfers, and communications between Garrick and Elise.
There was also a handwritten agreement.
Elise had agreed to help Garrick present Sienna as unstable.
In exchange, she would receive the river mansion and two million dollars after the divorce.
Elise had lied when she claimed she knew nothing at first.
She learned about Sienna months before the staircase incident.
She stayed.
She helped Garrick photograph Sienna during moments of exhaustion.
She sent messages designed to provoke arguments.
She provided Garrick with the name of a private custody consultant.
Her eventual cooperation with investigators was valuable.
But it did not make her innocent.
Elise was charged with conspiracy, fraud, and witness manipulation.
When Sienna learned the truth, she did not feel victorious.
She felt tired.
So many people had looked at her fear and seen an opportunity.
Miriam’s evidence also exposed Garrick’s betrayal of his mother.
He had created forged documents transferring several of Miriam’s remaining assets into the same overseas structure.
Once he left the country, she would have been abandoned with nothing.
Miriam had destroyed Sienna to protect a son who planned to rob her.
During negotiations, Miriam asked to speak with Sienna.
Sienna initially refused.
Then she agreed to one supervised meeting.
Miriam sat across from her in a small interview room.
Without pearls, tailored dresses, or the Ashford estate surrounding her, she looked ordinary.
“I thought protecting Garrick was the same as loving him,” Miriam said.
“No,” Sienna replied. “You taught him that love meant removing consequences.”
Miriam cried.
Sienna did not.
“I am sorry.”
“You are sorry because you lost.”
Miriam looked down.
Sienna continued.
“You watched him hurt me. You helped him hide it. You endangered my baby. An apology does not repair that.”
“Can you forgive me?”
“Maybe one day I will stop carrying anger. That does not mean you will return to my life.”
Sienna stood.
For the first time, she left Miriam behind.
Weeks later, prosecutors announced that Garrick would face charges for assault, coercive control, evidence tampering, fraud, embezzlement, and attempted custodial interference.
But his attorneys still believed they could avoid trial.
