Chapter 4 - The Doctor Who Changed the Record
Charles placed a thin folder on the dining table.
There was no readable text visible from where Sienna stood, but Garrick recognized it immediately.
“That information was obtained illegally,” he said.
Charles ignored him.
Sienna’s mother explained what the board had found.
The morning after Sienna was discharged, Ashford Industries transferred eighty thousand dollars to Vale Medical Consulting.
Dr. Nathan Vale had never performed legitimate work for the company.
The payment description claimed he had provided executive health-risk analysis.
No report existed.
No contract existed.
Only a transfer authorized by Garrick.
Sienna felt sick.
Dr. Vale had been kind to her.
He had examined her shoulder and listened as she described falling.
But Garrick had remained beside the bed.
Later, while Sienna was being taken for imaging, Garrick spoke to the doctor alone.
The original nurse’s note reportedly stated that Sienna hesitated when asked whether she felt safe at home.
That sentence vanished from the final medical record.
Garrick looked at the police officers.
“A billing irregularity is not a crime.”
“No,” Sienna’s mother said. “But falsifying a medical record may be.”
Miriam stepped between her son and the table.
“Dr. Vale has treated this family for years. Perhaps the payment was unrelated.”
“It wasn’t,” Charles replied.
He revealed that Dr. Vale had contacted the board’s attorney that afternoon.
The doctor knew the payment had been discovered.
He was frightened.
And he had agreed to cooperate.
Garrick’s face hardened.
“That coward.”
Sienna stared at him.
“You paid him to erase what I said?”
“I paid him for discretion.”
“You paid him to help you call me a liar.”
Garrick leaned closer.
“You were hysterical. I protected you.”
Sienna’s mother moved one step forward.
The officer nearest Garrick did the same.
Garrick stopped.
Miriam turned toward Sienna.
“You have no idea what pressure Garrick has been under. The company was about to become his.”
Sienna looked at the board members.
“Was?”
Charles answered carefully.
“The board delayed tomorrow’s vote after reviewing other financial transfers.”
There were more.
Twelve payments.
Three shell companies.
Almost four million dollars missing.
And every trail led back to Garrick.
But the final destination of the money was still unknown.
Until Sienna remembered something she had seen inside her husband’s desk.
A photograph of a mansion she had never visited.
