Chapter 1 - The Coffee Across Her Face

“Do what I say.”

Arthur’s arm snapped forward before his wife could move.

Hot coffee struck Claire Bennett across the left side of her face, neck, and ivory blouse.

She gasped.

Her chair scraped backward across the hardwood floor as she stumbled to her feet, one hand gripping the polished breakfast table to keep from falling.

Coffee dripped from her blonde hair.

Her cheek burned.

Across the table, Arthur’s sister calmly cut another piece of waffle.

Brooke barely looked up.

“Give us the card,” she said.

Claire pressed a folded kitchen towel against her neck.

Arthur stood over her in his navy suit, still holding the empty mug.

No apology.

No shock at what he had done.

Only expectation.

For six weeks, he had demanded the black bank card tied to the inheritance Claire’s mother had left her.

That morning, he had finally stopped pretending the demand was a request.

Claire looked at Brooke.

Then at Arthur.

His open hand extended toward her.

“Or get out.”

Something inside Claire went quiet.

Not weak.

Not broken.

Quiet.

She reached for the phone beside her breakfast plate.

Arthur tried to grab it.

Claire pulled it away and pressed one button.

Then she propped the phone against the flower arrangement, its camera facing both of them.

Brooke stopped chewing.

Arthur’s hand froze.

Claire slowly removed her wedding ring and placed it beside the empty coffee mug.

The small metallic click seemed louder than the storm in her chest.

“Keep the ring.”

She picked up the small brass key hidden beneath her phone.

Then she walked to the far end of the table and pulled aside a folded linen napkin.

A sealed black legal folder appeared.

Arthur’s expression shifted.

Brooke rose halfway from her chair.

Claire placed the key on top of the folder.

“This house is mine.”

Arthur took one step toward her.

Claire put her palm over the documents.

“Now explain the transfers.”

Arthur turned toward Brooke.

Brooke’s amused smile disappeared.
