Chapter 3 - The Cabinet Behind the Fireplace

Arthur recovered first.

He forced a laugh.

“You’re being dramatic.”

Claire kept one hand over the folder.

“Then explain the withdrawals.”

“What withdrawals?”

Brooke spoke too quickly.

Claire turned toward her.

“I didn’t ask you.”

Brooke’s lips tightened.

Arthur stepped closer.

“You’re upset. You’ve been under pressure.”

“You threw hot coffee at me.”

“You moved.”

Claire stared at him.

That was the moment she understood he would rewrite anything.

Even something that had happened seconds earlier.

Arthur reached toward the phone.

Claire lifted it.

“The recording has already uploaded.”

He stopped.

That was a bluff.

But it worked.

Brooke’s gaze returned to the built-in cabinet beside the marble fireplace.

Claire followed it.

The brass key in her hand belonged to that cabinet.

Her mother had given it to her years ago.

Claire had never used it.

Eleanor told her it contained old insurance papers and personal records.

After her mother’s death, Claire could not bring herself to open it.

Arthur had repeatedly offered.

Claire always refused.

Now she crossed the room.

Arthur blocked her path.

“You need medical attention.”

“I need you to move.”

“You’re not thinking clearly.”

Claire held the phone between them.

“Say that again for the camera.”

Arthur’s jaw flexed.

He stepped aside.

Claire inserted the key into the cabinet.

Brooke stood completely still.

The lock clicked.

Inside were three shelves.

The top held family albums.

The middle held sealed property files.

The bottom shelf was empty.

Except for a thin layer of disturbed dust and one torn corner of a bank envelope.

Something had recently been removed.

Claire opened the black folder Lena had prepared.

It contained transaction dates matching withdrawals from her trust.

Each transfer had been routed through a shell company named AB Holdings.

Arthur Bennett.

The initials were obvious.

But Lena’s report identified a second authorized contact attached to the company.

Brooke Bennett.

Claire turned slowly.

“You both signed.”

Brooke’s face turned pale.

Arthur stepped between them.

“She doesn’t understand finance.”

Brooke looked at him in disbelief.

Claire almost smiled.

He was already preparing to sacrifice his sister.

Then she saw something else inside the cabinet.

A small digital recorder taped beneath the middle shelf.

It had belonged to her mother.

A red light was still blinking.

👉 Claire’s late mother had hidden a recorder inside the cabinet—and someone had activated it weeks before Eleanor died.
