Chapter 6 - The Woman in Room 408

The hospital account belonged to Hudson Oaks Recovery Center.

Claire had never been a patient there.

But someone using her insurance identification had occupied Room 408 for five months.

Lena called the facility.

The patient’s registered name was Claire Bennett.

Arthur tried to leave.

Brooke blocked him.

“Who is she?”

“No one.”

“You spent two hundred thousand dollars on no one?”

Arthur shoved past her.

Claire stood between him and the hallway.

“Tell me.”

His eyes changed.

For the first time, she saw fear rather than rage.

Dr. Price picked up the hospital file.

“The treatment code is not psychiatric.”

“What is it?” Claire asked.

“High-risk pregnancy.”

The room went silent.

Brooke stared at her brother.

Claire felt as though the coffee had struck her again.

“Who is pregnant?”

Arthur said nothing.

Lena opened the attached admission record.

The patient’s real emergency contact had been hidden inside the metadata.

Madison Vale.

Claire recognized the name.

Madison worked as Arthur’s executive assistant.

She was twenty-nine.

She had attended Claire’s birthday dinner.

She had smiled across the table and complimented Claire’s marriage.

Claire lowered herself into a chair.

“How long?”

Arthur’s silence answered.

Brooke began laughing.

Not from amusement.

From disbelief.

“You stole Claire’s inheritance to hide your pregnant girlfriend?”

Arthur’s face twisted.

“Madison was threatening to expose everything.”

“So you put her in a private hospital?”

“She needed care.”

“You told me the transfers were for investments.”

Arthur turned on Brooke.

“And you didn’t ask questions because you wanted the money.”

Claire looked between them.

Both were guilty.

But Arthur had deceived everyone.

Then Dr. Price examined the hospital dates.

Her expression sharpened.

“Madison was admitted the same week Eleanor Bennett died.”

Claire looked up.

Her mother’s death had been ruled a stroke.

Sudden.

Natural.

Arthur had been alone with Eleanor earlier that day.

He told Claire they had discussed funeral plans.

Eleanor had still been alive then.

Claire gripped the table.

“What did my mother know about Madison?”

Arthur moved toward the door.

Lena stepped aside and let him pass.

Claire stared at her.

“Why aren’t you stopping him?”

Lena quietly turned the laptop around.

Arthur’s car had been remotely flagged by investigators.

The moment he started it, police would track him.

Then the recorder on the table crackled.

Eleanor’s voice resumed from a second hidden file.

“Arthur knows I found the hospital account.”

Claire closed her eyes.

👉 Eleanor had discovered both the theft and Arthur’s affair before she died—and her final recording suggested her death had not been natural.
