Chapter 7 - The Last Breakfast With Eleanor

Eleanor’s recording had been made four days before her death.

Her voice sounded weak but clear.

“I confronted Arthur about the hospital payments. He denied Madison was pregnant. Then he asked whether Claire had opened the locked cabinet.”

Claire looked toward the empty shelf.

Something important had been removed.

Eleanor continued.

“I placed the original trust amendments in a blue envelope. If they are missing, Arthur has taken them.”

Brooke looked at Arthur’s abandoned place at the table.

“He searched the cabinet.”

Claire remembered returning home after her mother’s funeral.

Arthur had been standing near the fireplace.

He said he was looking for photographs for the memorial.

Claire had believed him.

The recording continued.

“Arthur believes destroying the amendments will make the earlier trust valid. He is wrong. Copies are held by my attorney.”

Lena released a breath.

The trust was safe.

But Eleanor had more to say.

“If anything happens to me, check the breakfast-room camera.”

Claire frowned.

“There is no camera.”

Brooke looked toward the ceiling.

Arthur had removed the interior security system shortly after Eleanor’s death.

He claimed the cameras made the house feel like a business.

Lena contacted the security company.

The system had backed up recordings remotely for thirty days after deactivation.

The company still retained archived footage because the account had never been closed.

The final morning of Eleanor’s life was recovered within an hour.

Claire watched on Lena’s screen.

Eleanor sat at the same breakfast table.

Arthur stood beside her.

There was no sound.

He placed a glass of orange juice in front of her.

Eleanor drank.

Ten minutes later, she clutched her chest.

Arthur did not call for help immediately.

He searched her handbag.

Then he opened the fireplace cabinet and removed the blue envelope.

Only after hiding it inside his jacket did he call emergency services.

Claire could not breathe.

Brooke covered her mouth.

Dr. Price stared at the screen.

“The delay may have cost her life.”

Claire watched Arthur kneel beside Eleanor and pretend to help.

He had looked grief-stricken when paramedics arrived.

At the funeral, he held Claire’s hand.

He whispered, “I’ll protect you now.”

Claire stood slowly.

The pain in her face no longer mattered.

“My mother knew.”

Lena nodded.

“And now we can prove it.”

A police officer called Lena.

Arthur’s car had stopped outside Hudson Oaks Recovery Center.
