Chapter 5 - The Doctor at the Door

Claire opened the door before Arthur could stop her.

Dr. Hannah Price stood on the porch with rain on her coat and fear in her eyes.

Behind her waited Lena Ortiz, Claire’s financial investigator.

Lena took one look at Claire’s stained blouse.

“What happened?”

Arthur spoke immediately.

“She spilled coffee during an argument.”

Claire lifted the phone.

“I recorded what happened.”

Arthur fell silent.

Dr. Price entered the breakfast room and placed a sealed envelope on the table.

“I owe you the truth.”

Three months earlier, Arthur had brought Claire to Dr. Price’s private clinic.

He told the doctor Claire suffered from memory loss, paranoia, and impulsive spending.

“He said you were endangering yourself,” Dr. Price explained.

Claire stared at Arthur.

“You told her that?”

“I was worried.”

Dr. Price shook her head.

“No. You paid me to prepare an incompetency assessment.”

Brooke looked at Arthur.

“You said she agreed.”

Arthur ignored her.

Dr. Price’s voice trembled.

“I wrote the report. Then I discovered the financial petition attached to it.”

The petition requested emergency control over Claire’s property and trust.

Arthur claimed Claire was mentally unstable and unable to manage money.

If approved, he would become temporary guardian of her assets.

The hearing was scheduled for the following morning.

Claire’s knees weakened.

“You were going to take everything.”

Arthur’s expression became hard.

“I was saving our marriage.”

“By declaring me incompetent?”

“You refused to act like a wife.”

Lena opened her laptop.

She had traced the missing trust money through six accounts.

The funds purchased a luxury condo in Manhattan.

Not in Arthur’s name.

In Brooke’s.

Claire looked at her sister-in-law.

Brooke’s mouth fell open.

“I didn’t buy a condo.”

Arthur stepped backward.

Lena continued.

The purchase contract showed Brooke’s electronic signature.

But bank footage proved Arthur had completed the transaction alone.

He had used his sister’s identity to hide the theft.

Brooke turned toward him.

“You set me up.”

Arthur’s nostrils flared.

“You were paid.”

“To introduce you to the bank officer. Not to put everything in my name.”

Claire realized their partnership had never been built on trust.

Only greed.

Arthur was willing to destroy both women.

Then Lena showed Claire one final transfer.

Two hundred thousand dollars had been sent to a private hospital account.
