Chapter 8 - Madison’s Bargain
Police reached Hudson Oaks minutes after Arthur.
He was arrested in the hallway outside Room 408.
Madison Vale watched from her bed as officers handcuffed him.
She was seven months pregnant.
Claire arrived later with Lena.
Madison began crying the moment she saw her.
“I’m sorry.”
Claire remained near the door.
“For the affair?”
“For all of it.”
Madison explained that Arthur had promised to leave Claire.
When she became pregnant, he rented an apartment for her.
Then Eleanor discovered the payments.
Arthur moved Madison into the private hospital under Claire’s insurance identity.
“He said you were dangerous,” Madison whispered. “He said you would hurt the baby.”
Claire looked at the monitors beside the bed.
“And you believed him?”
“I wanted to.”
The answer was painfully honest.
Madison reached inside the bedside drawer and removed a small flash drive.
Arthur had visited her the night Eleanor died.
He was panicked.
He asked Madison to destroy a bottle of heart medication and a blue envelope.
Instead, she hid both.
“I recorded him,” Madison said.
“Why?”
“Because he frightened me.”
The audio captured Arthur saying Eleanor had “forced his hand.”
He admitted crushing extra medication into her orange juice.
He claimed it would only make her confused long enough for him to retrieve the trust papers.
But when Eleanor collapsed, he waited before calling for help.
Madison had kept the bottle as protection.
Arthur later threatened to take the baby if she exposed him.
Claire listened without interrupting.
Madison wiped her face.
“I know I don’t deserve anything from you.”
“No,” Claire said. “You don’t.”
Madison lowered her eyes.
“But your child didn’t choose this.”
Claire asked Lena to contact a lawyer for Madison.
Not because Claire forgave her.
Because the unborn child deserved protection from Arthur.
Madison began sobbing.
“Why would you help me?”
Claire looked through the glass wall at Arthur being led away.
“Because I’m not him.”
Police charged Arthur with financial fraud, assault, coercive control, forgery, and evidence tampering.
The investigation into Eleanor’s death was reopened.
Brooke was taken in for questioning.
She insisted she knew nothing about the medication.
