Chapter 9 - The Sister Who Watched
Brooke sat across from detectives for nine hours.
At first, she denied everything.
Then they showed her fingerprints.
She admitted Arthur had given her the blue envelope three days before Eleanor’s death.
“He told me it proved Claire was hiding money.”
“What did it actually prove?” Detective Nora Walsh asked.
“That Arthur could never touch the inheritance.”
Brooke knew exactly why he was desperate.
She had introduced him to the bank officer who helped copy Claire’s trust credentials.
She had created AB Holdings.
She had accepted money from the stolen accounts.
And when Eleanor discovered the scheme, Brooke warned Arthur.
“You knew he was confronting her that morning,” the detective said.
“I didn’t know he would drug her.”
“But afterward, you helped hide the papers.”
Brooke’s composure finally broke.
“He said Eleanor had collapsed on her own.”
“Then why didn’t you return the envelope?”
“Because I wanted my share.”
Those five words destroyed her last defense.
Brooke had not planned Eleanor’s death.
But she had used it.
She watched Claire grieve while continuing to steal from her.
She moved into the house to help Arthur monitor Claire.
She ate at Eleanor’s table.
Smoked inside Eleanor’s home.
And smiled when Arthur threw coffee at Claire because she believed fear would force Claire to surrender the card.
Brooke accepted a plea agreement in exchange for testimony.
When Claire learned, she felt angry.
“Twelve years isn’t enough.”
Lena understood.
“But her testimony may convict Arthur of murder.”
Claire looked at the burn marks fading on her neck.
Justice would never feel equal to what had been taken.
Her mother would still be dead.
Her marriage would still be a lie.
But accountability mattered.
At the preliminary hearing, Arthur appeared in court.
He looked directly at Claire.
“You know I loved you.”
Claire felt nothing.
“No,” she said. “You loved access.”
Arthur’s attorney claimed Eleanor’s death had been accidental.
The extra medication might have caused confusion, but not death.
Then the medical examiner revealed a new finding.
Eleanor had not died solely from the drug.
She had died because someone deliberately disabled the emergency alert pendant around her neck.
