Chapter 4 - Her Mother’s Warning

Claire removed the recorder.
Arthur’s confidence cracked.
“Put that down.”
“Why?”
“It’s private.”
“It belonged to my mother.”
Brooke moved around the table.
“Claire, you’re injured. Let’s stop this.”
Claire pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Eleanor’s voice emerged.
“If Claire is listening to this, Arthur has probably begun asking for access.”
Claire stopped breathing.
Arthur reached for the recorder.
She stepped away.
Eleanor continued.
“He presented me with an investment proposal three months ago. I refused. The company documents listed Brooke as a silent partner.”
Brooke sat down heavily.
Arthur’s face darkened.
“That old woman hated me.”
Claire looked at him.
“She protected me from you.”
The recording continued.
“I discovered Arthur attempted to use Claire’s future inheritance as collateral. I changed the trust terms immediately. Neither Arthur nor any member of his family can legally access the principal.”
Claire looked at the bank report.
“Then how did they transfer the money?”
Eleanor answered from the recording as though she had heard the question.
“If money disappears, someone has forged Claire’s medical authorization or declared her incapacitated.”
Claire felt cold.
Medical authorization.
Three months earlier, Arthur had insisted she visit a private clinic after she fainted at work.
The doctor had asked strange questions about stress, memory, and anxiety.
Claire assumed it was routine.
Now she understood.
Arthur had been building evidence that she was mentally unstable.
Eleanor’s voice softened.
“My daughter loves deeply. She will mistake patience for loyalty. She will excuse what should never be excused.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“I’m sorry, Mom.”
Arthur scoffed.
“You’re taking advice from a dead woman.”
Claire turned off the recorder.
“No. I’m taking evidence from her.”
Sirens sounded faintly in the distance.
Brooke stood.
“You called the police?”
Claire had not.
Arthur checked his phone.
His face tightened.
Then someone knocked at the front door.
A woman called from outside.
“Mrs. Bennett? This is Dr. Hannah Price. I need to speak with you before your husband has you committed.”
Arthur stared at the doorway.

Claire’s blood ran cold.
👉 Arthur had not only stolen Claire’s money—he had arranged for a doctor to declare her mentally unfit before she could expose him.
