Chapter 12 - The Forged Custody Petition

The petition was sophisticated.
It included Daniel’s Social Security number, military records, and a copy of his driver’s license.
It claimed he and Rebecca had secretly planned the pregnancy together.
Several attached messages appeared to show romantic conversations between them.
All were fake.
But the filing created public chaos.
Reporters accused Rebecca of inventing the garage attack to hide an affair.
Trevor’s attorney argued that Daniel had manipulated her into turning against her husband.
Daniel’s reputation collapsed overnight.
The police department temporarily suspended his volunteer emergency credentials while investigators reviewed the claim.
Rebecca watched him sit alone in his kitchen.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
“You didn’t do this.”
“They used the baby to destroy you too.”
Daniel looked toward her stomach.
“I spent my whole life thinking Richard was my brother. Now I learn he was my father and someone used my genetic material to create a child.”
“You have a right to feel whatever you feel.”
“But I don’t have a right to claim what Trevor stole.”
Rebecca studied him.
“You’re the biological father.”
“That does not make me your child’s parent unless you choose that.”
His answer brought tears to her eyes.
Trevor believed biology created ownership.
Daniel understood that parenthood required consent, responsibility, and love.
A forensic analyst traced the custody petition to a computer inside Linda’s private law office.
Police searched the building.
Linda was gone.
But they found a hidden audio system connected to Northstar’s headquarters.
For years, Linda had recorded executives, lawyers, and family members.
One recording captured her speaking with Trevor about the fertility procedure.
“You should use your own sample,” Linda said.
Trevor answered, “My father’s trust requires a healthy heir. The clinic says I carry the same cardiac mutation that killed Caroline.”
Rebecca stopped the recording.
Trevor had another reason for using Daniel.
He feared his own child might inherit a heart condition.
Yet he called Rebecca’s baby a bastard while knowing he had intentionally chosen the donor.
The recording continued.
Linda asked what would happen to Rebecca after the birth.
Trevor said, “A grieving widower receives sympathy. A divorced father receives questions.”
Linda replied, “Then make it look natural.”
The evidence proved premeditated murder conspiracy.
Police upgraded the charges against both of them.
The recording also mentioned a location.
The old Hale family funeral home.
Detective Ruiz led a team there.
The building had been closed since Richard’s supposed cremation.
Inside the preparation room, they found an underground storage chamber.
Richard lay on a medical cot.
Alive.
Linda was gone.
Rebecca rushed to the hospital when police called.
Richard opened his eyes after treatment.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
“For what?”
“For making the trust.”
“You were trying to protect the company.”
“I made your child a target.”
Rebecca took his hand.
“Trevor and Linda did that.”
Richard looked toward Daniel.
“My son.”
Daniel stood frozen.
Richard explained that his mother forced him to hide the truth for decades.
He asked Daniel for forgiveness.
Daniel did not offer it immediately.
But he stayed beside the bed.
Then Richard gave Detective Ruiz the final piece of evidence.
A small memory card hidden beneath his hospital bracelet.
It contained footage from the funeral home.

Linda stood beside an empty coffin while Trevor said, “Once the world believes Dad is dead, Rebecca becomes the only obstacle.”
👉 Richard was finally safe, and the recording exposed the entire conspiracy—but Linda was still free and preparing one last attack.
