Chapter 4 - The Father Who Died Twice

Richard Hale’s official death certificate listed heart failure.
He had been cremated two days later.
Linda arranged everything.
Trevor told Rebecca his father wanted a private farewell because he hated public attention.
There had been no funeral.
No viewing.
No chance for Rebecca to say goodbye.
Detective Elena Ruiz examined the hidden phone.
“The recording alone does not prove murder,” she said. “But the photograph gives us probable cause to review his medical records.”
The hospital initially refused.
Richard had been treated at Hale Memorial, a private hospital partly owned by Linda’s family.
By evening, the hospital claimed the records had been accidentally destroyed during a software migration.
Sarah looked at Rebecca.
“That is not an accident.”
Rebecca remembered Richard differently from Linda and Trevor.
He had been stern, but never cruel.
During the first year of her marriage, he quietly paid for her mother’s cancer treatment after Trevor refused.
Richard once told Rebecca that Trevor had inherited his ambition but none of his restraint.
Two months before his supposed death, Richard asked to meet Rebecca alone.
Trevor prevented it.
He said his father was confused.
Now Rebecca wondered what Richard wanted to tell her.
Daniel helped retrieve deleted files from the black phone.
One message survived.
Richard had written to an unknown number:
Rebecca must learn that the properties in her name were purchased with stolen pension money. She is innocent. Protect her and the child.
The reply contained only an address.
An abandoned Northstar property outside the city.
Police searched it the next morning.
Inside a locked basement, they found boxes of financial ledgers.
The records showed Northstar had diverted millions from an employee pension fund into luxury development projects.
Trevor signed several transfers.
Linda approved them.
Rebecca’s electronic signature appeared on the ownership documents.
She had been framed as the final recipient.
“If the company collapses,” Sarah explained, “you could look like the person who benefited.”
Rebecca sat heavily on a wooden crate.
Trevor had not merely used her as a clean owner.
He had prepared her to take the blame.
Detective Ruiz found another envelope beneath the ledgers.
It was addressed to Rebecca in Richard’s handwriting.
Inside was a notarized statement.
I transferred voting control of Northstar to a trust for Rebecca’s unborn child because Trevor and Linda stole from our employees. Rebecca is not part of their crimes.
The document named a trustee.
Samuel Grant.
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
“That’s your full name.”
Daniel’s face changed.
He closed his eyes.
“My legal name is Daniel Samuel Grant.”
“You knew Richard?”
Daniel did not answer immediately.
Detective Ruiz moved closer.
Finally, Daniel said, “Richard was my older brother.”
Rebecca stared at him.
Trevor had always described Daniel as a stranger who moved into the neighborhood two years earlier.
“He asked me to watch the house,” Daniel said. “He believed Trevor would eventually try to hurt you.”
Rebecca stood.
“You knew I was in danger and never told me?”
“I promised Richard I would wait until I had evidence.”
“You watched me live with him.”
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
Before Rebecca could respond, Daniel’s phone rang.
He listened for several seconds.
Then his face went pale.
The police officer guarding Rebecca’s house had been found unconscious.

And Rebecca’s prenatal medication was missing.
👉 Daniel had been placed next door to protect Rebecca, but someone had already reached the medicine she took every night.
