Chapter 5 - The Pills Trevor Replaced
Rebecca stopped taking every medication immediately.
Her obstetrician ordered blood tests.
The prenatal vitamins were safe.
But the blood-pressure pills prescribed by a doctor recommended by Linda had been replaced.
The capsules contained a drug capable of causing severe contractions and placental complications.
Rebecca had taken three doses.
She was admitted to the hospital for observation.
The baby remained stable, but the doctor warned that another dose could have caused premature labor.
Trevor arrived at the hospital with his attorney.
The restraining order kept him outside her floor, but he gave reporters a statement.
“My wife is suffering from pregnancy-related paranoia. My mother and I are trying to protect her from people exploiting her condition.”
Rebecca watched the interview on television.
He looked concerned.
Calm.
Loving.
The same man who had held a lighter over gasoline now claimed she was mentally unstable.
Linda released a second statement.
“Rebecca has become obsessed with accusing our family of crimes. We fear for the unborn child.”
Within hours, social media filled with edited clips of Rebecca arguing with Trevor.
He had recorded private fights and removed everything he said before she raised her voice.
Several Northstar employees claimed she controlled company finances.
Their statements matched exactly.
Trevor was preparing the public to believe she was guilty.
Sarah entered the hospital room carrying court documents.
“Trevor filed for emergency medical guardianship over you.”
Rebecca stared at her.
“He wants the authority to make decisions while I’m pregnant?”
“He claims you’re refusing necessary medication and creating a risk to the child.”
The hearing was set for the next morning.
If Trevor won, he could control her treatment.
He could choose the doctors.
He could place her back on the poisoned pills.
Daniel stood near the window.
“We need Richard’s original trust file.”
Sarah nodded.
“The notarized statement helps, but Trevor will argue Richard lacked capacity. We need proof he was competent and proof Rebecca had no knowledge of the pension transfers.”
Daniel knew where Richard stored his private records.
A lakeside cabin four hours north.
Rebecca wanted to go.
Her doctor refused to discharge her.
Daniel left with Detective Ruiz.
Before going, he placed a small emergency phone in Rebecca’s hand.
“Do not trust anyone you didn’t personally call.”
That night, a nurse entered carrying a syringe.
Rebecca checked her badge.
The name matched a hospital employee.
But the nurse did not scan Rebecca’s wristband.
“What is that?” Rebecca asked.
“Medication to prevent contractions.”
“My doctor said no new medication.”
The nurse moved closer.
“It was just ordered.”
Rebecca pressed the emergency button.
The nurse grabbed her wrist.
Rebecca screamed.
Hospital security rushed inside.
The woman dropped the syringe and ran toward the stairwell.
Police caught her on the ground floor.
She was not a nurse.
She had stolen the uniform from a locker.
Detective Ruiz questioned her.
The woman refused to name who hired her.
But the syringe contained the same drug found in Rebecca’s pills.
