Chapter 15 - The Lawyer Who Knew Everything
Emily survived.
Her pelvis was fractured, but doctors expected her to recover.
Detective Ruiz questioned her at the hospital.
Emily insisted Sarah had been driving.
Sarah denied it.
Security footage showed the vehicle leaving, but the driver’s face was hidden.
The license plates belonged to a car rented using Sarah’s identification.
Sarah claimed her wallet had been stolen days earlier.
Rebecca wanted to believe her.
Sarah had fought Trevor from the beginning.
She had exposed the fake medical reports and protected the trust.
But she also knew where Emily would meet Rebecca.
Police searched Sarah’s office.
They found $100,000 in cash beneath a floorboard.
Several bills matched serial numbers from Linda’s private account.
Sarah was arrested.
She stared at Rebecca as officers handcuffed her.
“This is a setup.”
“That’s what everyone says.”
“Rebecca, think. Who benefits if you stop trusting me?”
“Linda.”
“And who had access to my office after the church meeting?”
Daniel did.
He had picked up case files while Sarah remained with Rebecca.
Daniel’s face tightened when she confronted him.
“You think I planted the money?”
“I don’t know what to think.”
“You know me.”
“I thought I knew Trevor.”
The words hurt him.
He stepped back.
Rebecca hated what the Hales had done to her.
Every new lie made trust feel foolish.
Detective Ruiz examined the rental-car records.
The reservation came from Sarah’s office computer.
But the login occurred while Sarah was in court.
Building footage showed a cleaning contractor entering her office.
The contractor’s face matched a Northstar employee loyal to Linda.
Police arrested him.
He confessed to planting the cash and copying Sarah’s identification.
But he denied driving the car.
The driver had worn Sarah’s coat and wig.
Emily had seen the disguise through rain and shock.
Sarah was released.
Rebecca apologized.
Sarah did not pretend it had not hurt.
“You’re allowed to be afraid,” she said. “But after this ends, you’ll have to decide whether fear gets to choose who you trust.”
The driver was later identified through traffic cameras.
Dr. Calvin Moore.
The physician who wrote Rebecca’s false mental-health reports.
He had fled after disconnecting from the guardianship hearing.
Police arrested him at a motel near the state line.
He confessed that Linda ordered the attack because Emily’s testimony could convict her of Caroline’s murder.
Moore also admitted he had altered Richard’s medical records and supplied the drugs used to poison both Richard and Rebecca.
In exchange for a reduced sentence, he agreed to testify.
The case against Trevor and Linda became overwhelming.
Then Rebecca went into labor five weeks early.
She was rushed to the hospital during a violent storm.
Daniel waited outside the operating room.
Trevor’s attorney arrived with an emergency order.
It claimed that because Daniel was the biological father, he had authorized the hospital to transfer the newborn into private protective custody.
Daniel had signed nothing.
The order bore Judge Brooks’s forged signature.
