Chapter 17 - The Trial of Trevor and Linda Hale

The trial began six months later.
Rebecca entered the courtroom carrying no fear she needed to hide.
Caroline was home with a court-approved caregiver and Daniel.
Trevor sat beside his attorney in a gray suit.
Linda wore black.
They did not look at each other.
The prosecution opened with the garage video.
Trevor held the lighter.
Linda demanded Rebecca’s signature.
The hidden camera captured every threat.
Then came the altered medication.
The fake nurse.
The false guardianship reports.
The pension ledgers.
The fertility records.
The kidnapping.
The church attack.
The newborn abduction.
Each crime connected to the same motive.
Control.
The prosecutor played Trevor’s confession inside the blue furnace room.
“She wouldn’t stop screaming.”
The jury heard him describe Caroline’s death.
Linda’s face remained still until the prosecutor played her church confession.
“Caroline was weak.”
Richard lowered his head in the gallery.
Emily testified about the pension records.
Dr. Moore admitted poisoning Rebecca’s medication and falsifying Richard’s medical condition.
Patricia described Linda’s order to stop the newborn’s oxygen.
Daniel testified about the stolen genetic material.
The defense attacked him.
“You stand to gain access to an $18 million company through your biological daughter.”
Daniel answered calmly.
“I signed an irrevocable waiver surrendering control to an independent trust.”
The attorney tried again.
“You live near Rebecca.”
“I moved there because Richard asked me to protect her.”
“You now have a relationship with her?”
Daniel looked toward Rebecca.
“We are raising Caroline together. We have not defined anything beyond what is safe for her and Rebecca.”
The honesty left little to attack.
Rebecca testified last.
Trevor’s attorney displayed photographs of her signing Northstar documents.
“You benefited from these properties.”
“I lived in one house and received none of the stolen money.”
“You trusted your husband enough to sign without reading.”
“Yes.”
“So you admit poor judgment.”
Rebecca looked at Trevor.
“I admit I trusted the wrong person. That is not the same as joining his crimes.”
The attorney asked why she smiled in the garage before Daniel opened the door.
“Because I knew the camera was working.”
“Were you provoking Trevor?”
“I was surviving him.”
The prosecutor played the final portion of the footage.
Rebecca’s voice said, “Your time is up.”
Trevor leaned toward her as deputies watched.
He whispered, “It isn’t.”
The microphone on the defense table captured him.
The judge heard it.
The jury heard it.
His attorney closed his eyes.
Trevor had threatened her in the middle of his own trial.
The jury deliberated for three days.
They returned with verdicts on forty-seven counts.
Guilty.
Again.
Guilty.
Again.
Trevor stopped standing after the twelfth count.
Linda remained upright until the charge involving Caroline.
Guilty of conspiracy to commit murder.
Her knees weakened.

Then the clerk reached the charges involving Rebecca’s newborn daughter.
👉 The jury had condemned nearly every part of their scheme, but the final verdicts would decide whether Linda’s order against baby Caroline was legally treated as attempted murder.
