Chapter 10 - The Deal Behind the Affair

Vanessa removed her earrings with shaking hands.

The glamorous woman who had arrived beside my husband seemed to disappear.

“I met Michael eight months ago,” she said.

Michael stepped toward her.

“Don’t.”

She ignored him.

Vanessa had been working as a private events consultant in Chicago when Michael contacted her.

At first, their relationship was professional.

Then romantic.

Michael told her our marriage was over.

He claimed I refused to accept the divorce and used Leo to control him.

Vanessa believed him.

Or chose to.

Three months into the affair, Michael told her he had discovered a hospital error involving Leo’s birth.

He showed her partial records and suggested that Vanessa could claim to be Leo’s biological mother.

In return, he promised her marriage, money, and ownership in a new hotel company.

“You agreed to steal my son?” I asked.

Vanessa wiped her face.

“He said Leo already knew you weren’t his mother.”

I felt sick.

“He is five.”

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

Michael scoffed.

“Now she’s inventing stories to save herself.”

Vanessa reached into her purse and removed a tiny digital recorder.

“I started recording him two weeks ago.”

Michael lunged.

A security guard restrained him before he reached her.

The crowd recoiled.

Vanessa held the recorder against her chest.

“Last night, I told him I wouldn’t do it. He threatened to release private photos and make it look like I forged everything alone.”

“You still came today,” I said.

Her eyes dropped.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

I looked around at the destroyed birthday party.

“At some point, fear became a choice.”

Vanessa nodded.

She did not argue.

Then she gave the recorder to Rachel.

“The agreement is on there. The forged certificate. The shares. The custody plan.”

Rachel pressed play.

Michael’s voice filled the garden.

But the first sentence was not about me.

It was about Eleanor.

“Once my mother is declared incompetent, the company is ours.”

Eleanor went still.

👉 Michael’s conspiracy was larger than my stolen shares—he had also been building a case to take control of his mother’s life and fortune.
