Chapter 19 - The Question No Mother Can Prepare For
That evening, I sat beside Leo on his bed.
The balloons from the party were gone.
His navy tuxedo had been replaced by dinosaur pajamas.
He held the small wooden airplane Michael had given him for his fourth birthday.
“Is Daddy in jail?” he asked.
I did not lie.
“He was arrested.”
“Because he hurt me?”
“Because he made many dangerous choices.”
Leo looked down at the airplane.
“Did he stop loving me?”
My heart broke in a new place.
I pulled him into my arms.
“Nothing you did caused this.”
“But he wanted the other lady to be my mommy.”
“He wanted people to believe something that wasn’t true.”
“Why?”
There was no answer simple enough for a five-year-old.
Because his father wanted power.
Because envy had hollowed him out.
Because some people treated love as ownership.
“He was angry about things that had nothing to do with you,” I said. “And he made terrible choices.”
Leo was quiet.
Then he asked whether Vanessa would return.
“No.”
She had entered a cooperation agreement and faced charges of her own for document theft, fraud participation, and false statements.
Her testimony reduced her sentence, but it did not erase her responsibility.
Dr. Hart lost his medical license and later pleaded guilty to falsifying records and supplying the sedative.
Michael remained in custody after investigators found evidence that he had planned to move money offshore.
His attorneys could no longer portray him as a misunderstood husband.
The evidence was too complete.
The recordings.
The forged signatures.
The hidden records.
The drugged champagne.
The bruise on Leo’s shoulder.
Months of careful deception had collapsed because a frightened little boy remembered a woman at the gate.
Leo placed the wooden airplane in a drawer.
“I don’t want this anymore.”
I kissed his forehead.
“You don’t have to decide tonight.”
He looked at me.
“Can we have my birthday again?”
I smiled through my tears.
“Yes.”
