Chapter 17 - The School Across the Ocean

Michael’s voice played from the second memory card.

Once he gained temporary custody, he intended to enroll Leo in a boarding school in Switzerland.

Not next year.

Within forty-eight hours.

Vanessa sounded shocked on the recording.

“He’s five.”

“He’ll adjust.”

“What about Andrea?”

“She won’t know where he is until the jurisdiction changes.”

My hand covered my mouth.

Every cruel decision suddenly made sense.

Michael did not want Leo.

He wanted leverage.

He knew I would sign anything to bring my child home.

He planned to remove Leo from the country, force me to surrender my remaining shares, then leave our son in the care of strangers.

Eleanor walked away from the recording and stood alone beneath the American flag near the terrace.

I followed her.

“He is my son,” she said. “And I do not recognize him.”

“You are not responsible for what he chose.”

“I protected him from consequences his entire life.”

Her voice broke.

“That may be why he believed consequences were for other people.”

It was not a confession I expected from her.

For years, Eleanor and I had been polite but distant.

She rarely showed affection.

But that afternoon, she took my hand.

“I will testify against him.”

Michael called her three times from his attorney’s office.

She rejected every call.

Then a message arrived.

If Eleanor cooperated with police, Michael threatened to reveal financial misconduct at Whitmore Development.

The board panicked.

Several executives urged us to resolve everything privately.

They feared scandal.

Stock losses.

Public humiliation.

I looked at the balloons, the abandoned chairs, and the cake Leo had never gotten to cut.

Michael had counted on that fear.

He believed powerful families always chose reputation over truth.

Eleanor called an emergency board meeting for the following morning.

“We will disclose everything ourselves,” she said.

Rachel warned that doing so could damage the company.

Eleanor looked at me.

“Then we rebuild it honestly.”

But Michael still possessed one weapon.

The stolen files contained legitimate evidence of an old corporate crime.

And Eleanor’s signature was on it.

👉 To defeat Michael publicly, Eleanor would have to admit the darkest mistake of her career—and risk losing the company she had spent forty years building.
