Chapter 2 - The Marriage Everyone Envied

Michael’s fingers tightened around my wrist.

“Don’t do this here,” he whispered.

I looked at the guests surrounding us.

“Here?” I asked. “You brought your mistress to our son’s birthday party and let her call herself his mother.”

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“I’m not his mistress.”

That sentence hurt more than the first.

Michael released me and faced the crowd.

“There are private family matters involved,” he announced. “Andrea is emotional.”

Several guests shifted uncomfortably.

Emotional.

That was the word Michael had used for months whenever I questioned his late meetings, missing weekends, or locked phone.

We had been married for seven years.

To everyone outside our home, we were perfect.

Michael was the polished heir to Whitmore Development. I managed the company’s charitable foundation and spent most of my time raising Leo.

The estate belonged to Michael’s mother, Eleanor, but we had lived there since Leo was born.

For months, Michael had become distant.

He stopped eating dinner with us.

He slept in the guest room and blamed work.

Whenever I asked whether there was someone else, he kissed my forehead and told me I was imagining things.

Then Vanessa appeared.

She was introduced as a “brand consultant” helping Whitmore Development enter luxury hospitality.

She attended dinners.

Board events.

Even family brunches.

She laughed too loudly at Michael’s jokes and touched his sleeve whenever she spoke.

I noticed.

Michael told me not to be jealous.

But Leo noticed too.

One night, he asked why “the green-dress lady” was always looking at Daddy.

I had no answer.

Now she stood beside my son’s birthday cake claiming she had given birth to him.

And Michael still had not denied it.

I looked directly at my husband.

“Is she lying?”

Michael glanced toward the phone in my hand.

Then he said the words that silenced the entire garden.

“She may have proof.”

👉 Michael’s claim made the guests doubt me—but the proof Vanessa carried had one detail she never expected me to recognize.
