Chapter 9 - The Signature That Wasn’t Mine
Rachel handed me her phone.
A banking alert showed that twelve percent of my Whitmore Development shares had been transferred into a private holding company.
The authorization carried my name.
My signature.
But I had never signed it.
The transfer had cleared at 9:04 that morning while I was helping Leo get dressed for his party.
Michael glanced toward the estate.
He was calculating whether he could leave.
Eleanor saw it.
“Lock the vehicle gates,” she ordered.
The guards moved immediately.
Michael laughed, but there was no confidence left in it.
“You can’t imprison me.”
“No,” Rachel said. “But we can preserve evidence while law enforcement is contacted.”
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“You promised there wouldn’t be police.”
Michael turned on her.
“Shut up.”
Leo flinched.
I placed both hands over his ears and guided him toward Mrs. Grant.
“Take him inside.”
Leo resisted.
“I want to stay with you.”
I knelt.
“You helped me find the truth. Now I need you somewhere safe.”
He looked at Vanessa, then whispered, “She was crying last night.”
That surprised me.
Vanessa had not appeared frightened in the footage.
“What did she say?”
Leo looked toward Michael.
“She told Daddy she wanted out.”
The garden fell silent again.
Vanessa’s eyes filled with real tears this time.
Not performance.
Fear.
Michael stared at her as though she had betrayed him.
I realized the woman who had humiliated me might also be trapped in something she no longer controlled.
But she had still entered my home.
Stolen records.
Used my son.
And publicly tried to erase me.
I would not mistake fear for innocence.
Rachel enlarged the banking details.
The holding company that received my shares was called VCM Holdings.
Vanessa Cole Matthews.
Her initials.
Vanessa looked at the screen and shook her head.
“I’ve never seen that company.”
Michael’s face told me she was telling the truth.
He had placed the stolen shares in a company bearing her name.
Not to enrich her.
