Chapter 13 - Why Michael Chose Vanessa

Police arrived before the birthday candles had melted.
They separated Michael and Vanessa and collected the recorder, the forged certificate, the banking records, and the security footage.
Michael was not arrested immediately.
Rachel warned me not to expect instant justice.
Financial crimes took time.
Custody cases took time.
But the officers ordered Michael to remain away from Leo while they investigated the terrace footage.
Eleanor revoked his access to the estate.
He left through the front gate under escort, still insisting everyone would regret humiliating him.
Vanessa agreed to take investigators to Michael’s downtown office.
Before she left, she asked to speak with me.
I almost refused.
Then I remembered she knew why Michael had selected her.
We stood beneath the deflated edge of a balloon arch while guests quietly departed.
Vanessa looked exhausted.
“My full name is Vanessa Claire Matthews,” she said.
“That was on the holding company.”
“It was also the name of a nurse at St. Catherine’s five years ago.”
I stared at her.
Vanessa explained that her older sister, Claire Matthews, had worked in medical records at the hospital during Leo’s birth.
Claire had died two years later.
Michael discovered the connection while reviewing old hospital files.
He approached Vanessa pretending he wanted information about a data error.
He gradually convinced her that Claire had helped conceal an illegal adoption.
Vanessa believed her dead sister might have been involved.
That belief made the false story feel possible.
“Did your sister alter the file?” I asked.
“I don’t know.”
Vanessa’s voice trembled.
“Michael said the locked cabinet contains Claire’s confession.”
A dead woman could not defend herself.
Michael had built his scheme around two grieving women.
Vanessa, desperate to understand her sister.
Me, desperate to protect my son.
But there was one problem with his story.
I remembered Claire Matthews.
She had visited me in intensive care.
She had placed an envelope beside my bed and whispered, “Keep this somewhere your husband cannot find it.”
I had been heavily medicated.
I had forgotten.

Until now.
👉 Claire had given me evidence five years earlier—and it might still be hidden in the hospital bag stored in Eleanor’s attic.
