Chapter 12 - The Camera Above the Terrace
Mrs. Grant looked toward the stone terrace.
“There is another camera.”
Michael’s face changed instantly.
The estate’s main security system covered the gates and driveway.
But after a jewelry theft the previous year, Eleanor had installed a separate camera above the terrace.
It stored footage locally.
Michael had never been given access.
Mrs. Grant retrieved the memory card.
Rachel inserted it into a laptop used by the party musicians.
The recording showed the garden thirty minutes before Vanessa took the microphone.
Michael stood behind the floral arch with Vanessa.
Their voices were faint but clear.
“You make the announcement,” Michael said.
Vanessa shook her head.
“There are children here.”
“Do it, or I release everything.”
Then Leo appeared near the balloons.
He had wandered over while looking for a toy.
Michael crouched in front of him.
My body went cold.
On video, my husband gripped Leo’s shoulder.
“Go back to your mother,” he whispered. “And don’t tell her what you heard.”
Leo tried to pull away.
Michael tightened his hand.
Vanessa said, “You’re hurting him.”
Michael released Leo only when a server walked past.
A bruise was already forming beneath Leo’s tuxedo collar.
I had seen the mark while dressing him but believed he had bumped into playground equipment.
Now I knew.
I could barely breathe.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Several guests turned away from Michael in disgust.
He pointed at the screen.
“I was guiding my son.”
“You threatened him,” I said.
Michael’s arrogance finally collapsed.
His eyes darted toward the locked gates, the guards, the recorder, the laptop.
There was nowhere left to hide.
Still, he tried.
He looked at Vanessa.
“She planned all of it.”
Vanessa laughed through her tears.
Then she removed a small key from her purse.
“No, Michael. I only helped you hide it.”
She looked at me.
“The original hospital file isn’t here.”
“Where is it?”
“In his private office downtown.”
