Chapter 4 - The Gate Opened From Inside
I tapped the 12:47 a.m. recording.
Michael lunged for the phone.
Eleanor stepped between us.
“Touch her again,” she said coldly, “and security will remove you from my property.”
For the first time, Michael looked afraid of his mother.
The footage began without sound.
Vanessa stepped out of Michael’s SUV at the front gate.
She wore a hooded coat, but her jeweled earrings caught the security light.
She didn’t use the keypad.
She waited.
Thirty seconds later, the gate opened from inside the estate.
A figure approached from the service path.
The camera angle showed only a dark jacket and one hand.
On that hand was a heavy silver ring.
My stomach tightened.
I had seen that ring every day for seven years.
Michael’s college crest.
He still wore it whenever he attended private alumni dinners.
The footage froze.
Michael had remotely disconnected the camera system from his phone.
Guests began murmuring.
“That proves nothing,” he said. “I went outside because Vanessa called me.”
“At midnight?” Eleanor asked.
“She was distressed.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“I came to tell him the truth about Leo.”
Leo pressed closer to my side.
I felt his fingers clutch my gown.
“What truth?” I asked.
Vanessa looked at him with unsettling possession.
“That he was taken from me.”
A woman near the cake covered her mouth.
I stared at Michael.
“Taken?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with carefully controlled tears.
“I gave birth while I was young and terrified. Michael arranged everything. He said a wealthy family could give my baby a better life.”
“That’s insane,” I said.
But Michael remained silent.
Too silent.
Vanessa continued.
“Years later, I learned he had given my son to his own wife.”
I turned toward Michael.
He looked at the ground.
And in that second, the lie became dangerous.
Not because Vanessa sounded convincing.
